Contemporary Residential Architecture.
AMA is a Winchester-based architectural practice specialising in thoughtful, design-led, contemporary residential architecture across Hampshire and the South East, working with clients who value good design and want to invest in creating an individual and carefully considered home.
Established in 1998 by Chartered Architect Anthony Munden, the practice works with private clients on bespoke new homes, comprehensive renovations and remodelling projects, sensitive alterations to period and character properties, and carefully considered contemporary extensions.
Anthony personally designs, develops and oversees every project, remaining closely involved from the earliest design ideas through technical development and construction. This continuity is central to the way AMA works, helping to ensure that the original design intent is carried through to the finished building.
For larger and more complex projects, Anthony brings together and coordinates the appropriate team of structural engineers, building services consultants, quantity surveyors and other specialists as required. This provides the resources and specialist expertise needed to deliver substantial residential projects while retaining the direct relationship between client and architect.
Projects vary considerably in scale, but share a common emphasis on good design, natural light, high-quality materials and careful detailing. The practice is particularly suited to clients who value the quality of the architecture and finished building, whether transforming an entire property or investing in a smaller but carefully considered architectural intervention.
-
Individual new houses designed specifically around the client, site and setting.
Every project begins with understanding how the client wants to live and the particular opportunities and constraints of the site. Consideration is given to orientation, natural light, views, landscape, materials, energy performance and context to create a home that is both distinctive and practical.
We’ll also discuss your budget to ensure design ambitions and financial expectations are aligned from the start. This conversation gives me the insight I need to prepare a detailed fee proposal, an outline of services, and a clear roadmap for the stages ahead.
-
Comprehensive refurbishment and remodelling of existing houses to improve the way they function and respond to contemporary family life.
Rather than looking at individual alterations in isolation, the house is considered as a whole – rethinking layout, circulation, natural light, views and connections to the garden while identifying opportunities to improve the character, performance and quality of the existing building.
-
Sensitive alteration and extension of period and character properties, including houses within Conservation Areas and other sensitive settings.
The approach begins with understanding the qualities of the original building and identifying where contemporary architecture can enhance it. New interventions can be clearly contemporary while remaining sympathetic to the scale, materials and character of the existing house.Sustainability and low-energy strategies are embedded into the design. Starting with a fabric-first approach to maximise natural efficiency, I then explore renewable technologies to ensure your project is comfortable, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible.
I am experienced in working with protected sites such as Conservation Areas, Listed Buildings, and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. I prepare and submit the planning application on your behalf, managing the process with the local authority from start to finish.

Not every successful architectural project needs to be large. A relatively modest extension can fundamentally change the way a house is experienced when design quality is placed at the centre of the project.
Contemporary residential extensions are designed with careful consideration of space, light, materials, views and the relationship between house and garden. These projects are particularly suited to clients looking for an individual architectural solution rather than a conventional extension.
Why Work With Anthony?
One Architect, From First Ideas to Completion
Anthony personally designs, develops and oversees every project, remaining closely involved from the earliest design ideas through technical development and construction.
This continuity is central to the way AMA works, helping to ensure that the original design intent is carried through to the finished building. It also means that Anthony maintains a detailed understanding of the client's priorities and the decisions that have shaped the project as it develops.
Where additional specialist expertise is required, Anthony brings together and coordinates the appropriate professional team. This allows substantial and technically demanding projects to be undertaken while preserving the direct client–architect relationship that is central to the way he works.
Over 30 Years' Experience
Anthony has over 30 years’ experience as a Chartered Architect and established his own architectural practice in 1998.
His experience encompasses bespoke new houses, major residential renovations and remodelling, contemporary extensions and sensitive work to period properties, including projects within Conservation Areas and other challenging planning contexts.
This experience allows both the architectural possibilities and the practical implications of a project to be considered from the outset.
Design in Three Dimensions
Three-dimensional modelling is integral to the design process.
Rather than relying solely on conventional plans and elevations, proposals are developed as detailed 3D models so that clients can properly understand the spaces being created and make informed decisions before committing to construction.
BIMx models and virtual-reality walkthroughs can also allow clients to explore and experience their proposed home during the design process, helping them understand space, scale, light and the relationship between different parts of the building.
From First Ideas to Completion
Anthony can provide a complete architectural service, from initial feasibility studies and planning strategy through detailed design, Building Regulations, tendering and construction.
Remaining personally involved throughout provides continuity between the initial design concept and the many detailed decisions required to turn that concept into a completed building.
