Design Process.
As a sole practitioner, I offer a truly personal service - you’ll work directly with me at every stage of the project. I believe the relationship between client and architect is central to the success of any design, so I focus on building a collaborative and trusting partnership from the first steps to completion.
For many of my clients, the construction process is unfamiliar. I make sure to guide you through design, planning, and construction stages, so you always feel informed and confident as the project moves forward.
While my approach is guided by the RIBA Plan of Work, it is tailored to suit each client, their project brief and the level of service they would like.
-
Every project begins with a conversation. I’ll take time to understand you, your site, and your goals before we shape a clear brief together. At this stage, we’ll identify opportunities, challenges, and risks so you have a realistic view of what’s possible.
We’ll also discuss your budget to ensure design ambitions and financial expectations are aligned from the start. This conversation gives me the insight I need to prepare a detailed fee proposal, an outline of services, and a clear roadmap for the stages ahead.
-
cUsing a digital survey and computer model, I explore the site in detail — from orientation, building form, and views to planning constraints and context.
Early sketches and 3D studies test different options against your goals and budget. This leads to a clear concept design that balances ambition with practicality and sets a strong foundation for the project.
I also consider the building’s shape and position to maximise comfort and energy efficiency, ensuring you have a low-energy, long-life home.
-
At this stage, I refine layouts, form, and finishes, presenting proposals through a fully detailed 3D model so you can engage closely with the design. Material samples support this, conveying the quality, texture, and colour of the proposed finishes.
Sustainability and low-energy strategies are embedded into the design. Starting with a fabric-first approach to maximise natural efficiency, I then explore renewable technologies to ensure your project is comfortable, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible.
I am experienced in working with protected sites such as Conservation Areas, Listed Buildings, and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. I prepare and submit the planning application on your behalf, managing the process with the local authority from start to finish.
-
With planning approval in place, I develop the design into a detailed technical package for Building Regulations and contractor pricing. This ensures the project can be accurately costed and tendered.
My approach goes beyond technical compliance — I carefully consider the intersections and connections between materials to create a building that is elegant, refined, and well-crafted.
I coordinate the wider project team — including engineers, energy advisors, and specialist suppliers — so their expertise is fully integrated into the design.
When preparing a tender shortlist with you, I draw on a network of trusted contractors who share my commitment to quality, helping ensure your project is delivered to the highest standard.
-
I guide you through the tendering process and help appoint the contractor best suited to your project.
Once construction begins, I can act as Contract Administrator — overseeing quality, detail, progress, and payments, while resolving issues as they arise. I also coordinate input from consultants, suppliers, and subcontractors to ensure the design intent is carried through into construction.
On site, I work closely with the construction team so they fully understand the required level of detail and craftsmanship. This hands-on collaboration ensures the finished building is finely crafted, beautifully detailed, and true to the design vision.
I also make sure that sustainability and low-energy strategies are properly implemented, so your home performs every bit as beautifully as it looks.
-
At completion, I make sure all approvals, certificates and documentation are in place so you can
move in with confidence. I remain on hand during the settling-in period to address any minor issues,
and I like to stay in touch to ensure your new home performs as expected and continues to bring you comfort and satisfaction.
