Arthur Road

Hyde, Winchester

Arthur Road is a rear extension to a Victorian semi-detached house within the Hyde Conservation Area. The north-facing garden and restricted site required a careful balance between natural light, privacy and structural efficiency.

From the outset, the steel frame was conceived as an integral part of the architecture rather than simply a means of supporting the building. The structure defines the proportions of the extension, frames views of the garden and allows extensive areas of glazing with carefully detailed supporting elements.

The steelwork is integrated directly into the glazing system, allowing the corner of the extension to open completely onto the garden. The resulting architecture is deliberately honest, expressing both its structure and construction while creating bright, contemporary living spaces.
