Sarum View
Winchester
Sarum View is a modest extension to a 1990s detached house where the brief was to reorganise the principal living spaces around a new open-plan kitchen, dining and day living space overlooking the garden.
The architectural expression is intentionally simple and honest. A carefully proportioned glazed rear elevation is achieved through a refined structural solution that reduces the depth of the roof edge, allowing the glazing to extend almost uninterrupted to the underside of the roof. The result is a simple, elegant extension that maximises natural light and strengthens the relationship between the principal living spaces and the garden.
The external spaces were designed as an integral part of the project. Rather than treating the rear garden as a conventional suburban garden, a courtyard garden approach creates a sequence of intimate outdoor spaces that strengthen the relationship between the house and garden while providing a greater sense of privacy.
