Quarry Road

St Giles Hill, Winchester

Quarry Road is a detached Victorian house on an elevated plinth enclosed by substantial brick and flint walls, with the principal accommodation set approximately one storey above the road. Although previous alterations had added accommodation, they failed to make the most of the site's setting or improve the relationship between the house and its outdoor spaces.

The project reorganised the lower ground floor by rebuilding the garage as an in-situ concrete structure connected directly to the basement. Constructing the garage with a flat roof created a generous south-facing terrace at upper ground floor level, opening up views towards the South Downs that had previously been hidden by the pitched roof of the original garage.

A contemporary glazed extension creates a direct relationship between the kitchen, day living space and the new terrace. The laser-cut aluminium brise soleil references the Victorian steelwork supporting the existing loggia on the west elevation, allowing contemporary architecture and historic detailing to sit comfortably alongside one another.
